Colour is integral to our lives and can be a highly personal subject. We all have a unique response to colour that we develop through personal experience and association, which is why colour is almost impossible to define. What can be said with certainty is the meaning and significance it has for human beings. Regardless of the intuitive or visceral response it evokes, colour is an experience that is as artistic as it is philosophic.

“In visual perception a color is almost never seen as it really is – as it physically is. This fact makes color the most relative medium in art.” - Josef Albers

Josef Albers, an educator and artist, published ‘Interaction of Colour’ in 1963, a survey on colour that proposed: ‘one does not just see what the mind knows’ - a progressive notion, still today. Albers’ text presented extensive studies into the mutable effect of colours, demonstrating that colours are in a continuous state of flux and can only be understood in relation to other colours that surround them. One of the most influential art and design texts in the 20th century, the book provides an experimental study, rather than a theoretical framework, of the art, science, psychology, practical application and even the magic of colour.
 

In the exhibition, ‘Chromaticity’, twelve artists have been invited to explore the significance of colour within their personal practice. Through research, inquiry and experimentation, the artists present a new understanding on the art of experiencing colour.
